Abstract

The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadronic CALorimeter (SDHCAL) is the first technological prototype in a family of high-granularity calorimeters developed by the CALICE Collaboration to equip the experiments of future lepton colliders. The SDHCAL is a sampling calorimeter using stainless steel for absorber and Glass Resistive Plate Chambers (GRPC) as a sensitive medium. The GRPC are read out by 1~cm $\times$ 1~cm pickup pads combined to a multi-threshold electronics. The prototype was exposed to hadron beams in both the CERN PS and the SPS beamlines in 2015 allowing the test of the SDHCAL in a large energy range from 3~GeV to 80~GeV. After introducing the method used to select the hadrons of our data and reject the muon and electron contamination, we present the energy reconstruction approach that we apply to the data collected from both beamlines and we discuss the response linearity and the energy resolution of the SDHCAL. The results obtained in the two beamlines confirm the excellent SDHCAL performance observed with the data collected with the same prototype in the SPS beamline in 2012. 7. Determining effective permeability at reservoir scale: Numerical simulations and theoretical modeling

Abstract

Determining the effective permeability (keff) of geological formations has broad applications to site remediation, aquifer discharge or recharge, hydrocarbon production, and enhanced oil recovery. The objectives of this study are: (1) to explore an approach to estimating keff at the reservoir scale using the critical path analysis (CPA), (2) to evaluate the accuracy of this new approach by comparing the estimated keff to the numerically simulated effective permeability, and (3) to compare the performance of CPA estimates of keff to estimates by three other models i.e., perturbation theory (PT), effective-medium approximation (EMA), and renormalization group theory (RGT). We construct two- and three-dimensional random (uncorrelated) geologic formations based on permeability measurements from the Borden site and assume that the permeability distribution conforms to the log-normal probability density function over a wide range of means and standard deviations. Comparing keff estimated via CPA to keff values derived from numerical flow simulations indicates that CPA provides accurate estimations in both two and three dimensions over a wide range of heterogeneity levels, similar to RGT. Inter-model comparisons show that although PT and EMA provide reasonable keff estimations in rather homogeneous formations, they substantially overestimate the effective permeability in highly heterogeneous formations.

Abstract

The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadronic CALorimeter (SDHCAL) prototype using Glass Resistive Plate Chambers as a sensitive medium is the first technological prototype of a family of high-granularity calorimeters developed by the CALICE collaboration to equip the experiments of future leptonic colliders. It was exposed to beams of hadrons, electrons and muons several times in the CERN PS and SPS beamlines between 2012 and 2018. We present here a new method of particle identification within the SDHCAL using the Boosted Decision Trees (BDT) method applied to the data collected in 2015. The performance of the method is tested first with Geant4-based simulated events and then on the data collected by the SDHCAL in the energy range between 10 and 80~GeV with 10~GeV energy steps. The BDT method is then used to reject the electrons and muons that contaminate the SPS hadron beams.

Abstract

Among the current population of the 81 known trans-Neptunian binaries (TNBs), only two are in orbits that cross the orbit of Neptune. These are (42355) Typhon-Echidna and (65489) Ceto-Phorcys. In the present work, we focused our analyses on the temporal evolution of the Typhon-Echidna binary system through the outer and inner planetary systems. Using numer- ical integrations of the N-body gravitational problem, we explored the orbital evolutions of 500 clones of Typhon, recording the close encounters of those clones with planets. We then analysed the effects of those encounters on the binary system. It was found that only 22% of the encounters with the giant planets were strong enough to disrupt the binary. This binary system has an ~3.6% probability of reaching the terrestrial planetary region over a time scale of approximately 5.4 Myr. Close encounters of Typhon-Echidna with Earth and Venus were also registered, but the probabilities of such events occurring are low (~0.4%). The orbital evolution of the system in the past was also investigated. It was found that in the last 100 Myr, Typhon might have spent most of its time as a TNB crossing the orbit of Neptune. Therefore, our study of the Typhon-Echidna orbital evolution illustrates the possibility of large cometary bodies (radii of 76 km for Typhon and 42 km for Echidna) coming from a remote region of the outer Solar System and that might enter the terrestrial planetary region preserving its binarity throughout the journey., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

44. Tailored positioning and number of hand rub dispensers: the fundamentals for optimized hand hygiene compliance.

Abstract

Availability of alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) dispensers at positions adapted to the work flow of healthcare workers (HCWs) is decisive in order to carry out indication-based hand rubbing. Although requirements and guidelines regarding the positioning of ABHR dispensers are in place, scientific evidence is often lacking. In order to analyse the impact of the location and number of ABHR dispensers on hand hygiene performance, additional dispensers were systematically placed in patient rooms in a surgical 38-bed ward at Marburg University Hospital, Germany to complement the existing dispenser locations. ABHR use was monitored continuously before and after complementation using the NosoEx hand hygiene monitoring system. The ward had 53 dispensers before the intervention and 82 dispensers after the intervention. The addition of dispensers increased ABHR consumption across the entire ward. Before the intervention, mean consumption was 20.6 mL/patient-day, whereas mean consumption after the intervention was 25.3 mL/patient-day. Depending on the combination of dispenser locations, consumption increased through targeted supplementation in patient rooms. The presence of two or three dispensers per patient room resulted in significantly greater ABHR consumption compared with one dispenser per patient room. The preferred location combinations were entrance–front bed–back bed and entrance–foot end. ABHR consumption can be increased significantly by optimizing the position and number of dispensers. The outstanding factors are visibility and integrability of dispenser use into the work flow; in particular, a dispenser should be positioned in the entrance area. Abstract

Background: The safety and efficacy of botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNTA) treatments are well established, but injection techniques, target muscles, and toxin doses continue to evolve, with each refinement producing improvements in treatment outcomes. The recommendations in this consensus move away from standard templates and illustrate how to tailor treatments to individual patterns and strengths of muscle activity, and patient preferences. Methods: Seventeen experts in the fields of plastic surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and neurology convened in 2022 to develop consensus‐based recommendations for the use of botulinum toxin A for the treatment of horizontal forehead lines, glabellar frown lines, and crow's feet lines that reflect current clinical practice. The focus was on how to tailor injections to individual patients to optimize treatment outcomes. Results: For each upper face indication, consensus members describe how to perform a dynamic assessment to optimize the dose and injection technique for each patient. A tailored treatment protocol is presented for commonly observed patterns of dynamic lines. Units of Inco are defined and the precise location of injection points, illustrated with the use of anatomical images. Conclusion: This consensus provides up‐to‐date recommendations on the tailored treatment of upper facial lines based on the latest research and collective clinical experience of the expert injectors. Optimal outcomes require thorough patient evaluation, both at rest and during animation, using both visual and tactile cues; detailed understanding of facial muscular anatomy and how opposing muscles interact; and use of a BoNTA with high precision to target identified zones of excess muscle activity.
